The School of Friendship takes a field trip to the Kirin Grove at the Peaks of Peril to visit the kirin to learn more about their culture, and just generally have some fun. However, the timing of the group's arrival could not be more important to the Kirin, as the race's unfortunate past catches up to them. It is revealed that the Kirin of the Grove are actually refugees from the Kirin homeland of Xiaomia imperialized by an embittered warlord that is one of the remaining few members of an older breed of Kirin, referred to as the Qilin, this warlord, the female elder Kirin known as Lady Gongzhu, of which she brought an army of Qilins, Taoties, Hunduns, Qiong Qis, Tao Wus, and her head storm beast from Pana, a Panan raiju, or storm wolf, named Sandā Raitoningu Inu, which leads the army of beasts under Gongzhu's orders. The Village leader confusedly asked how Gongzhu was able to find them, of which she revealed was the creepy conductor pony Applejack and Fluttershy met, turning out to be a shape-shifting Qiú Yú, aptly named Xiao Chī Guaiwu, who crazily thanked Applejack and Fluttershy for inadvertently helping Gongzhu finding the Kirins during their friendship mission, shaming Applejack and Fluttershy for an unwitting part in leading Gongzhu here, of which had Sanda howl to cause the beasts to charge in and start capturing the Kirin. Fortunately, Tempest and Grubber came to save the school group and Autumn Blaze and Rain Shine, along with the Kirins Spring Glow, Summer Flare, Winter Flame, Fern Flare, and others, escape from Gongzhu's forces, of which all leave on a giant flying chinese battleship. While the group and the called in Lodgers go to see how they can fix this, Applejack and Fluttershy are consumed by doubt and began questioning themselves as the Elements of Harmony. Rain Shine thus suggests they must go to Xiaomia and meet Emperor Long, who will direct them to the leader of his imperial army General Wushu, who in turn is actually a master of teaching inner peace in terms of the magic of friendship, able to solve friendship insecurities and offer mental cures. Though while they train under him and his nephew Youyi Chop, as well as learn more about the Kirin and Qilin, they meet Sanda's original owner, The Bestiary King, who was turned into a cobra and despite being unable to speak, helps the heroes subtly because of an uncertain change of heart.
